What exactly does Botox® do?

Neuromodulators like BOTOX®, Dysport, and DAXXIFY™ block certain chemical signals from the nerves that cause tiny facial muscles to contract.

Injecting a neuromodulator into the muscle causes it to contract more gently and softens expression lines. With less underlying movement, the skin remains smooth and unwrinkled. 

Wrinkle relaxers are fantastic tools for treating and preventing fine lines, wrinkles, and folds.

Where can Botox be injected?

Neuromodulators can be used to treat:

  • Forehead lines

Frequently asked questions

Neurotoxins like Botox eventually wear off, allowing the nerves to once again send signals to the muscles and cause contractions. 

Botox and Dysport lasts 3-4 months for most of our patients. 

However, dosing size, treatment area, how long you’ve been using neurotoxins, and your individual metabolic rate can all impact the longevity of this treatment. We’ve seen Botox and Dysport last anywhere from 2-6 months. 

DAXXIFY™ can last longer than 6 months when dosed appropriately.

  • Don’t drink alcohol for at least 24 hours prior.
  • Avoid blood-thinning or anti-inflammatory medications for at least two weeks beforehand. If you’re prescribed a blood thinner for medical reasons, you should call us to discuss.

  • Keep your head upright for 4-6 hours: that means no facials, massages, or lash appointments. 
  • Do not rub or touch the treatment area for at least 4-6 hours. 
  • Avoid working out for 24-48 hours.
  • Avoid excessive heat or sun exposure for 72 hours.

You might experience some sensitivity, bruising, swelling, or headaches, all of which are normal and will go away within a day or two. Just stay hydrated and ice the area to reduce swelling. 

Sylfirm X is a radiofrequency microneedling device that supercharges the collagen-stimulating effects of traditional microneedling by heating the tissue with radiofrequency energy. 

Radiofrequency microneedling generally gives faster, more dramatic results than standard microneedling. However, traditional microneedling is a great choice for patients who still want the skin-smoothing effects of microneedling while adhering to a more modest budget.

Botox is approved for patients who are 18 years or older, but we recommend starting preventative Botox in your mid-to-late 20s or early 30s. 

Neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, and DAXXIFY are very safe. They have very few side effects and are some of the most well-researched medications out there. 

Bruising or swelling may occur at the injection site and some patients experience headaches.

Neuromodulators are NOT recommended for people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neurological disease.

When your neurotoxin wears off, your muscles will gradually regain movement in the treatment area. As muscle activity returns to regular levels, expression lines and wrinkles will slowly reappear. 

DAXXIFY™ is the first FDA-approved peptide-powered frown line treatment that lasts for 6-9 months. 

Frown lines, otherwise known as elevens, glabella lines, or worry lines, are the vertical lines that appear between your eyebrows. Frown lines form as a result of your forehead muscles contracting, and are one of the most common treatment areas we see. 

The reason we typically use DAXXIFY™ to treat this area is because it can last for up to nine months, which is far longer than other neuromodulators. The longer duration leads to a retraining of these muscles and produces a softened, relaxed effect at baseline.  

Results from DAXXIFY™ can be seen as early as the next day after treatment, and typically within two days. 

In clinical trials, at least 50% of patients had no or minor lines 6 months after treatment. In some safety studies, between 5% and 17% of patients still had noticeable improvements 9 months later.

Our product recommendations are always patient-specific, but DAXXIFY™ is one of our favorite tools for addressing frowning lines between the brows. 

Neuromodulators like Botox are NOT recommended for pregnant people.

Although there have been no reports of pregnancy-related complications from Botox, there is simply not enough research to know whether it is safe to use Botox when pregnant. At ALDA, we always put safety first.
