The Art and Science of Lip Filler

Pop culture has elevated lip filler injections from a niche market to a household treatment, but despite the increased popularity, many still don’t understand the science and art behind the procedure.

Here’s everything you need to know about the non-surgical out-patient procedure:

During the aging process, we naturally lose volume around the mouth — although this is typical and absolutely normal, so is wanting to add that volume back. Lip filler is used to contour, plump and smooth the lips for a visibly enhanced shape that lasts up to a year.

The Science: What’s in lip filler and what happens to it as time goes on?

The primary ingredient found in the filler, hyaluronic acid (HA), is naturally found in the body too. In our body, HA holds water and helps keep the skin hydrated and plump. You’ve likely seen this ingredient listed in some of your favorite skincare products, but a topical application can only moisturize, not restore lost volume. Injected, it has the ability to alter the shape, structure, and volume of your pout.

As for the injection itself, do prepare for some stinging. Although we’ll provide patients with numbing cream prior to injection, some degree of pinching is unavoidable. Still, no matter how hesitant you are of the needle aspect, done correctly, the injections only take a few minutes.

One of the best things about lip filler is its longevity. Following injection, the filler stays in place for up to a year. As time goes on the hyaluronic acid is metabolized and absorbed by our system. Once the treatment wears off, your lips will look the same as they did prior to the injection. While the procedure may be an investment upfront, it’s an incredibly safe FDA-approved treatment.

The Art: What can I expect from lip filler?

Although you can expect some swelling and bruising up to two weeks after injections, the final look can be as subtle or as plump as you’re comfortable with.

With anything cosmetic, it’s important to find an injector that you trust. Your results are largely determined by the person performing the procedure. AlDa ensures trustworthy and high-quality results that match your desired aesthetic.

For those new to injectables and filler, we recommend starting small — no more than half a syringe — and working your way up as you grow more confident and more comfortable with the process. Building up also ensures that you don’t go from thin-lipped to drastically plump right away.

Adding a bit of filler can alter the appearance of the entire face and a little bit goes a long way when it comes to addressing the appearance of smoker’s lines and even natural smile lines. A bit of plumping has the effect of creating a more hydrated and youthful appearance.

The experience of your provider will determine how your lips look, so make sure to communicate the type of lip you want to our providers so we can work to achieve your desired aesthetic (feel free to bring in pictures and get specific).
