How An Expert Recommends Treating Your Wrinkle & Fine Line Concerns

With aging comes change: some wanted, some not. One of those changes? Fine lines and wrinkles.

With aging comes change: some wanted, some not. One of those changes? Fine lines and wrinkles. While they may signify a life well-lived, you might not feel well living when they appear. Luckily, there are plenty of options that address your valid concerns.

As the co-owner and lead injector at AlDa Aesthetics, I am proud to share my experience. I am one of only a dozen Massachusetts nurse injectors to be a Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist. A CANS Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist is one of the highest certifications available in the medical aesthetic industry, given through the National Society of Plastic Surgery. Most recently, I was selected by Allergan, the nation’s largest pharmaceutical company and developer of the most utilized dermal filler and neuromodulator, BOTOX®, to be a trainer for their national institute, AM Allergan Medical Institute.

With over 18 years of pediatric critical care and seven years in the medical aesthetic industry, I am committed to ongoing training and education to ensure all my patients receive optimal care.

Let’s get into my favorite treatment option for fine lines and wrinkles: Neuromodulators, aka wrinkle relaxers.

One of the most popular treatments we offer, neuromodulators like BOTOX®, is the perfect way to reduce the appearance of aging skin. The FDA-approved medication is gently and precisely injected directly into the target facial muscles that activates creasing in the skin, which repeatedly over time, causes deep wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used to treat the upper face muscles, such as those pesky frown lines between our brows, forehead lines, and the lines around our eyes noticeable when we animate. Treatments are virtually painless, especially when performed by me…. after all, I treated kids for years! Trust me when I tell you I have so many tricks up my sleeve to ensure a painless treatment session.

The treatment works by decreasing muscle activity. The medication simply blocks and impedes the communication from the brain to muscle fibers, therefore, weakening muscle contraction. I like to use the example of folding a piece of paper over and over again for years…. You can imagine the crease in the paper is deep and etched into the paper. Similar to our active areas of muscle movement on the skin, those lines are etched in the skin and deep. Injections are both preventative and corrective, meaning there’s never a wrong time to start. (Still, I recommend starting earlier. With preventative injections, the wrinkles and fine lines won’t be able to form.) I always advise my patients to begin BOTOX® when they notice deep creases with animation. (Treat before it’s an issue.)

How much will you need? BOTOX® is an FDA-approved medication with a recommended dose. When you come in for your appointment, we’ll determine the appropriate treatment; however, keep in mind I would never recommend taking only half the dose of an antibiotic, so your recommended dose of BOTOX® is based on years of proven dosing recommendation in our research literature. Young men and women without etched lines can benefit from prophylactic BOTOX® to ensure they never have etched lines on the skin, so dosing may differ from those with established etched lines.

Dermal fillers are another personal favorite of mine. They can be used to contour the face and fill in lost volume from aging — working in perfect tandem with neuromodulators for a polished and refreshed look. Fillers work by hydrating the skin tissue and supporting the facial tissue that is no longer supported by the deep fat pads in our face.

The core active ingredient found in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally-occurring substance that can already be found in the skin. HA is responsible for giving the skin a plump and firm look, but as we age, our natural HA production slows down: enter filler.

One injection session can last up to a year and will add volume and decrease wrinkles depending on the injection site. With the ability to contour and make subtle changes to your aging face, the injector you choose is imperative — remember you’re paying for their expertise and credentials.

At AlDa, we offer a variety of HA dermal fillers which can be used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and can also be used for lip augmentation. The products are formulated to act like your body’s own naturally occurring hyaluronic acid and restore volume to your skin for total rejuvenation. Similar to neuromodulators, we’ll discuss your aesthetic goals to determine which product and what amount is right for you.
